Doors open, growth ensues, and new experiences follow from learning. But as with most things, there is so little time. Continuing to expand your knowledge about a field you have always been interested in, learning the newest developments in a field that you are currently employed or previously worked, venturing into a new, unexplored area or areas, can provide an enormous amount of stimulation, growth and open even new expanses that may peak your interest.

You have to take that first step and decide that you want to expand your world and challenge yourself to research courses or websites related to whatever area you are interested in and then commit the time required. Given the incredible resource of the internet, this task has become much easier and can be done from the comfort of your own home. You can also go to the local library where local activities, adult schools, and research tools are also available. Members of the staff are always eager to help and can provide a useful personal resource in your quest. So, let’s review the steps required in your quest and layout a framework for you to employ to achieve your goal of continuing your education.

1. Decide what area or areas you want to explore or expand your expertise.

• Sit down and list on a sheet of paper those areas that you would like to learn more about and whether it is just for inquiry, expand a current skill or hobby or possibly for a certificate showing completion of a certain course of study.
• Spend some time reviewing the list and prioritize your choices so you can determine those most important to you.
• Once you have those top choices, decide what you want to learn about each. It could just be an introduction to the field, an update on your current knowledge level, or a new skill.
• With this understanding in mind, you are ready for the next steps.

2. Search the net

• Do a web search for each item on your list, but make your search be specific to what you want to do. For example, learn woodworking, CPA courses, or an introduction to physics. The more specific as to what you want to learn, the better the search.
• Once you obtain your results, spend some time looking at the search results for the sites that most specifically meet your needs. Decide on the ones you want to explore in more detail until you are satisfied you have what you want.
• You are on your way to learning and exploring and be sure to put any appropriate dates regarding requirements on your calendar.

3. Local facilities

• The Library; The staff at the library will be more than eager to assist you. Using your list from #1 above, ask a member of the staff the best way to proceed with particular attention to any local facilities or expertise in the area(s) you are exploring. They also may be able to assist with your web search to narrow the search results and possibly help to localize the results, so you can explore close to home. The library may also be able to assist you with any local clubs related to the area in which you are interested.
• Adult schools; There are many adult schools that use the facilities of local schools to provide courses and also training in many areas. Examples are learning how to become a gourmet cook, woodworking or improving your computer skills are some courses that come to mind. Obtain a course catalog and see if any of the courses apply to your list and then contact the appropriate personnel for further information.
• Local colleges; There are local community colleges and four-year schools that may offer courses or certificates in the areas in which you are interested. Contact their Public Relations departments who will be able to direct you to the appropriate department for your inquiry.
